Plagiarism and Similarity Screening Policy

PLAGIARISM AND SIMILARITY SCREENING POLICY

Al-I'lam: Jurnal Komunikasi dan Penyiaran Islam
Faculty of Islamic Studies, Universitas Muhammadiyah Mataram, Indonesia

1. Originality and Academic Integrity

Al-I'lam: Jurnal Komunikasi dan Penyiaran Islam is committed to maintaining originality, academic integrity, transparency, and ethical standards in scholarly publishing.

All manuscripts submitted to the journal must represent original scholarly work and must not contain plagiarism, inappropriate text recycling, data fabrication, falsification, or duplicate publication.

Authors must properly acknowledge all sources, including scholarly publications, research data, quotations, figures, and other intellectual contributions.

2. Similarity Screening Requirements

All submitted manuscripts are subject to similarity screening using Turnitin or equivalent software before proceeding to the peer-review stage.

The journal applies an internal similarity threshold of less than 15%, excluding references and properly quoted material under consistently applied screening settings.

The similarity percentage is used as an initial screening indicator and must not be considered the sole measure of originality or plagiarism.

3. Editorial Assessment

The editorial team evaluates similarity reports by considering:

  1. The sources and extent of textual overlap.

  2. Proper citation and attribution.

  3. The location and context of similarities.

  4. Inappropriate paraphrasing or text recycling.

  5. Potential plagiarism or duplicate publication.

Manuscripts that exceed the internal threshold may be returned for clarification or revision, or rejected following editorial assessment.

A similarity score below 15% does not automatically guarantee manuscript acceptance or establish the absence of plagiarism.

4. Responsibilities of Authors

Authors are responsible for ensuring that their manuscripts are original and that all references, quotations, research data, and scholarly contributions are accurately presented.

Authors must disclose any relevant reuse of previously published material and comply with the journal's Author Guidelines and Publication Ethics Policy.

5. Handling Suspected Plagiarism

When potential plagiarism or publication misconduct is identified, the editorial team will conduct a fair and documented assessment.

Authors will be given an opportunity to provide clarification and supporting evidence where appropriate.

Depending on the nature and severity of the violation, editorial actions may include requests for clarification or revision, manuscript rejection, or post-publication correction, expression of concern, or retraction.

The journal follows relevant principles and guidance issued by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

6. Policy Implementation

This policy takes effect upon formal approval and publication on the journal's official website.

The policy applies prospectively to newly submitted manuscripts and those undergoing editorial processing from its effective date. Previously published articles remain subject to the policies applicable at the time of publication and to established procedures for addressing publication misconduct.
